DE BALIVIERE AVE. RIGHT TO PERMEATE | urban design + landscape
SPRING 2015 | ADVANCED OPTION STUDIO
Forest park is an amenity that serves not only the city of St. Louis, but also the entire region. De Baliviere Avenue is an iconic north entrance to the park.
De Baliviere Avenue connects forest park with Delmar Avenue. The once urban streetscape of De Baliviere Avenue has been evolved into vacant lots and suburban-style development. This has severed a pedestrian connection from Delmar Avenue to Forest Park. How can we reconnect and allow pedestrians, bikers, cars, and trains all permeate along De Baliviere Avenue?
To reconnect Delmar Avenue to Forest Park, this project proposes a series of compressing (urban streetscape) and releasing (open park) spaces. This allows for the activities of Forest Park to extend along De Baliviere Avenue, while also brining urban amenities and necessities for the neighborhood.
A new streetcar trolley line is currently being constructed that will run east along Delmar, south along De Baliviere Avenue to Forest Park. De Baliviere Avenue would be reconfigured with two lanes of car traffic, a bicycle path, and trolley line so the space allotted for pedestrians increases.
De Baliviere Avenue is a connecting path from north and this project would reengage that path allowing pedestrians, bicyclists, neighbors, drivers, and the like permeate to and from one of the major amenities of the region, Forest Park.
